Introducción
Tri-Valley CAREs trabaja para fortalecer la seguridad global al detener el desarrollo de nuevas armas nucleares en los Estados Unidos y promover la eliminación de las armas nucleares en todo el mundo. En lugar de aumentar la seguridad humana, las armas nucleares nos dañan. Además, representan uno de los grandes obstáculos sociales, económicos y ecológicos de nuestro tiempo.
Tri-Valley CAREs fue fundada en 1983 en Livermore, California, por vecinos preocupados porque vivían cerca del Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, uno de los dos laboratorios donde diseñan todas las armas nucleares de los Estados Unidos. El Laboratorio de Livermore opera el sitio principal que esta en Livermore y el sitio 300 que esta aproximadamente una milla del fin de Tracy, CA. En el sitio 300, el laboratorio conduce explosiones al aire libre soltando contaminantes el aire y agua alrededor. Los dos sitios están en la lista de “Superfund” de la Agencia de Protección Ambiental de Estados Unidos (EPA). Esto quiere decir que son de los sitios mas contaminados en el país.

The series of articles from the January 6 USA Today examines the costs – financial and human – of upgrading U.S. land-based nuclear missile silos, of which there are 450 located in the Midwest. The concept of the nuclear sponge is that this leg of the nuclear triad, which is uniquely vulnerable to a strike because the silos can be seen easily from space, is “useful” because it will “absorb” the initial nuclear strike on the U.S., making the Midwest a sacrifice zone.
