At Tri-Valley CAREs, we are excited to share our latest updates on the Superfund cleanup at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)! Thanks to the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC), we are proud to be among the first recipients of the Technical Assistance Grant (TAG) program. This grant allows us to bring independent technical expertise to the community, ensuring residents have clear, accessible information about the cleanup process and opportunities to participate in decision-making.
We are also happy to share that this program extends through 2026, giving us more time to work closely with the community as we advocate for stronger safeguards and push for a comprehensive cleanup at LLNL.
You’ll Be Seeing Us in the Community!
Over the past few weeks, we’ve been out in neighborhoods, talking to residents about the Superfund cleanup process and answering questions during our community walks. These walks are an opportunity for us to connect with you directly, hear your concerns, and provide updates in a more informal setting. If you want to walk with us, or for us to come to your Livermore neighborhood, let us know!
This is just the beginning—you’ll be seeing more of us in the coming months as we continue to make community engagement a priority. We want to make sure everyone impacted by LLNL’s contamination has the knowledge and resources to participate in cleanup decisions. We will also be having a community meeting soon!
New Resources: What You Need to Know About LLNL’s Superfund Cleanup
To help keep the community informed, we are sharing two important resources:
- Superfund Cleanup Factsheet – This factsheet provides a clear, easy-to-understand breakdown of the LLNL Superfund cleanup, including:
- Why LLNL was designated a Superfund site in 1987
- How decades of hazardous chemical and radioactive contamination have affected the site
- The ongoing cleanup efforts, including groundwater treatment, soil vapor extraction, and long-term monitoring
- Key concerns around tritium and heavy metal pollution, which can pose long-term health risks
- Superfund Cleanup Presentation – This is the PowerPoint we used in our recent monthly meeting, introducing our new Technical Advisor and discussing her future collaboration with Tri-Valley CAREs.
Why This Matters: A Safe & Thorough Cleanup for Livermore
For over 35 years, the LLNL Main Site has been undergoing cleanup under the Superfund program, but there is still a long way to go. Hazardous substances—including volatile organic compounds, tritium, and other toxic chemicals—continue to pose risks to the environment and public health. That’s why Tri-Valley CAREs is committed to advocating for a thorough cleanup that prioritizes community health and environmental justice. Through this Technical Assistance Grant, we are able to provide independent oversight, share key findings from regulatory documents, and push for stronger cleanup measures if needed.
A Huge Thank You to DTSC & Our Community
We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to DTSC for their support through the TAG program. This grant has made it possible for us to break down complex scientific reports and ensure transparency in the Superfund cleanup process.
And of course, thank you to our community—your engagement and participation make a difference. Whether you’ve joined our community walks, read our updates, or attended past meetings, your involvement helps ensure this cleanup remains a priority.
