The 90 day public comment period on the government’s Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS) officially closed on July 16th. During this comment period Tri-Valley CAREs, the other plaintiff organizations who brought the successful litigation against the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) that forced it to prepare the PEIS and the Union for Concerned Scientists, joined forces to get hundreds of participants trained to make comments at the five public hearings across the country, held more than 10 written commenting trainings, collected over 4000 pledges to comment, and worked with dozens of organizations to submit technical comments on the PEIS. We should all be proud of the amazing opposition to this dangerous plan that this effort has garnered!
Tri-Valley CAREs worked with California Congressman John Garamendi who submitted a comment on the PEIS.
Tri-Valley CAREs submitted a detailed technical comment on the PEIS on behalf of our membership.
Check out the training resources, video of the public hearings, background information and more at the PEIS central hub for information and action: https://pitpeis.com/
Check out the joint press release asking the NNSA to release withheld relevant information and to extend the public comment period on the PEIS (both of which they denied)
Many commenters requested the NNSA release relevant information that has been withheld, include analysis and information missing in the Draft PEIS and respond to comments with a re-released Draft PEIS with an additional comment period. Alternatively, the NNSA could decide to release a Final PEIS with responses to all of the public comments. We will keep you informed as we learn how the agency plans to proceed. Stay tuned!
