Global Nuclear Abolition Day September 26th
Check Out the Online Events All Week
Saturday, September 26th is the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons (IDTENW). The IDTENW was established in 2013 by the United Nations, in congruence with its overarching goal of achieving global nuclear disarmament.
In commemoration of the IDTENW this year, on September 25th and 26th, the UN is hosting several online global intergenerational events in four sessions and Back From the Brink is facilitating a whole week of actions with activities you can participate in each day! Scroll down to see the list of the week’s events from both organizations…
The UN events include two opportunities to watch online screenings of the new documentary about Daniel Ellsberg’s anti-nuclear work “An Ordinary Insanity,” as well as a discussion with the director and producer of the film. Additionally, there will be a discussion surrounding the Joint Appeal for Nuclear Abolition Day (which Tri-Valley CAREs has endorsed), social media action items relating to “Stop Nuclear Weapons: Peace is in Our Hands,” cultural performances, and more.
Recognizing the importance of global nuclear disarmament is as crucial as ever at this point in history, especially considering the nuclear weapons modernization activities happening both close to home and across the globe. As the US National Nuclear Security Administration rushes to expand plutonium pit production and nuclear warhead modernization, all the while pushing for weakened oversight and significant rulemaking changes that will put the public and employees at risk.
Further, at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, this broader modernization project means dangerous increases in plutonium throughput, or as the Lab calls it “Enhanced Plutonium Utilization.”
The UN sponsored Voices for a Nuclear-Weapon Free World event on Friday, September 25th features speakers including Michael Douglas, Oscar Arias, Ela Gandhi, Hon Gareth Evans, Baroness Miller of Chilthorne Domer, Tadashi Inuzuka, Tomas Countryman, Dr. Deepshikha Kumari Vijh, Rebecca Shoot, Kehkashan Basu, Jackie Cabasso, and John Hallam.
