Tri-Valley CAREs organized a recent meeting to discuss Lawrence Livermore National Lab’s (LLNL) Superfund Cleanup. This meeting included representatives from Livermore Lab, NNSA, Region IX EPA, the Department of Toxic Substances Control, and the Regional Water Quality Control Board. The discussion included the Draft 2nd 5-Year Review Cleanup at the Site 300 East/West Firing Areas, which include the Pit 7 Complex.
Pit 7 Complex is a buried, unlined dump site filled with mixed waste that leaked of uranium, tritium, perchlorate, and other contaminants into the groundwater aquifer at high concentrations. To mitigate leakage, a Drainage Diversion System (DDS) was implemented in 2019. However, this remedy did not function as intended, leading to more contamination.
In our comment on the 5 year review, we recommend undertaking a thorough Focused Feasibility Study with active public participation and suggest additional remedies to prevent groundwater from entering the waste pits.
