Tri-Valley CAREs’ Nuclear Policy Program Director, Tanvi Kardile, spoke on a panel alongside Jay Coghlan from Nuclear Watch New Mexico and Frank Von Hippel, Professor at Princeton University, at a Congressional briefing in the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, DC on June 4th.
The briefing, moderated by Stephen Young from Union of Concerned Scientists, was titled “Choices Before Congress on Plutonium Pit Production for New Nuclear Warheads.” The panelists focused on ways Congress should cut funding for plutonium pit production plans and how they could submit comments on the Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement on the National Nuclear Security Administration’s (NNSA) plutonium pit production program.
As a part of the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability’s “DC Days,” we were in Washington DC advocating for safer nuclear weapons and waste policy initiatives. We conducted over 80 meetings with Congressional offices where they were invited to the briefing.
In addition to fellow Alliance for Nuclear Accountability members, around fifteen staffers from both Representative and Senate offices came to the briefing, with the majority from Senate offices since the briefing was arranged by Senator Ed Markey’s (MA) office. The staffers were attentive and took thorough notes during the briefing, asking some good follow up questions after the presentations.
We are busy following up with the Congressional offices that attended the briefing!
