In a January 7th article, Livermore Vine reporter Jude Strzemp discussed the National Security Administration’s decision to retract its intention to publish a Draft Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS) for public comment for “Enhanced Plutonium Utilization,” which would increase plutonium use at Livermore Lab, along with Tri-Valley CAREs’ concerns about the decision. Instead, just the final SEIS will be released this year without any public hearings, comment, or public engagement whatsoever.

“This decision makes it clear that the Lab, and the National Nuclear Security Administration prefers that the Livermore community and the American public not engage in decision making about nuclear weapons development programs and the impacts on the communities that house them,” Tri-Valley CAREs executive director Scott Yundt told Livermore Vine.

The decision is based upon President Trump’s Executive Order on January 20, 2025 titled “Unleashing American Energy,” spurring amendments to the National Environmental Policy Act’s implementing rules.
