The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is coming to Livermore on May 12 to hear oral public comments about its nationwide plutonium pit production plan, in which Livermore Lab will be doing plutonium pit support work. To prepare, we will hold a Virtual Comment Training event on May 7 at 5:30pm (click HERE for the zoom link)

These comments will be on the record and we urge you to use your voice to say “NO TO NEW PLUTONIUM PIT PRODUCTION!” Here is the information for our Virtual Comment Training event and the Livermore Public Hearing (no virtual option):

As a resource to help you comment and encourage widespread comment-making in your community, we, along with other lawsuit plaintiff Nuclear Watch New Mexico, as well as the Union of Concerned Scientists, Physicians for Social Responsibility, and other groups from ANA, created a website that is now live!

As a result from a lawsuit brought by Tri-Valley CAREs and our colleague organizations Savannah River Site Watch and Nuclear Watch New Mexico, a federal judge in South Carolina found that the Department of Energy (DOE) and the NNSA violated the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) by failing to analyze the nation-wide environmental impacts of new plutonium pit production plans. This specifically includes the major new “plutonium pit support” work being done at Livermore Lab!

Pursuant to the resulting settlement (in January 2025), NNSA had to release a comprehensive Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS), the Draft of which was just released! This Draft PEIS must take a “hard look” at the nation-wide environmental and human health impacts of this plan. Most importantly, it provides a critical opportunity for public scrutiny of, and comment, on the analyses in this draft and the governments overall plans!

Tri-Valley CAREs, and many others, submitted detailed scoping comments in July 2025. We will be submitting a detailed, technical written comment on the Draft PEIS, and we hope you do to!

Some topics in the draft include:

  • Purpose and need for project
  • Proposed action and alternatives
  • LANL, SRS, and complex-wide environmental consequences
  • Cumulative impacts
  • Statutory requirements & environmental standards
  • Plutonium pit aging
  • Response to scoping comments
  • And more!

We encourage you to attend the public hearing on May 12 to give oral comments!

NNSA is also accepting written comments until July 16 by submitting comments via email to: PitPEIS@nnsa.doe.gov
