A team of Tri-Valley CAREs staff members, Scott Yundt, Tanvi Kardile, and Dash Orel (who is a constituent) teamed up with our colleague Maylene Hughes at Physicians for Social Responsibility to meet with Bay Area Representative Mark DeSaulnier (CA-10 Walnut Creek).
We briefed him on nuclear modernization and the proposal for “Enhanced Plutonium Utilization” at Livermore Lab. Maylene and Dash described House Resolution 317. Introduced on April 10th by US Members of Congress, Rep. Jim McGovern (MA-02) and Rep. Jill Tokuda (HI-2), the resolution which lays out the common sense steps needed to reduce nuclear risks and move toward a world free of nuclear weapons. The official title of the bill is, “Urging the United States to lead the world back from the brink of nuclear war and halt and reverse the nuclear arms race.”
We are happy to report that after the meeting, Representative DeSaulnier agreed to co-sponsor!
The goal of H. Res. 317 is to increase public awareness and serve as an organizing vehicle for people around the country who want to be involved and make a difference by engaging with their members of Congress to build support and cultivate Congressional leadership for fundamental changes to U.S. nuclear weapons policy. In addition to those core elements, H.Res. 317 explicitly opposes nuclear testing, supports the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) to address the legacy of harm caused by nuclear weapons, and prioritizes a just economic transition for the nuclear labor force and seeks to eliminate the president’s sole authority to launch a nuclear first strike. Rep. DeSaulnier joins 29 other co-sponsors, 6 of those being from California.
If you are a constituent of Rep. DeSaulnier’s district, please send a thank you message to his office! Here is a sample message:
Hi, my name is [Name]. I live in [City/Town] and I am a constituent of Representative DeSaulnier. Thank you for your co-sponsorship of H.Res. 317, “Urging the United States to lead the world back from the brink of nuclear war and halt and reverse the nuclear arms race.” It is extremely important that the U.S. returns to nuclear disarmament negotiations, as communities are concerned about a global nuclear arms race, the collapse of key arms control treaties, and rising tensions between major powers. Especially with my district being so close to the Livermore Lab, this co-sponsorship means a lot to our community.
Or ask your member of congress to co-sponsor H. Res. 317 if they haven’t done so. Click here to email a request to your member of congress to co-sponsor H. Res. 317!
