Solemn and Powerful Gathering at the Livermore Lab Gates on the 80th Anniversary of the US Bombing of Hiroshima
Around 100 people gathered at the Westgate entrance to Livermore Lab on the morning of Tuesday, August 6, 2025 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima.
The theme of the event was, 80 Years of Nuclear Devastation: Remember our History, Reshape Our Future.
A wonderful slate of speakers provided compelling insights and actions for the engaged audience. These speakers included Arjun Makajani, PhD (Institute for Energy and Environmental Research), Helen Jaccard (Veterans for Peace), Marylia Kelley (Tri-Valley CAREs Senior Advisor), Reverends Michael Yoshi (Speaking on Japanese Internment during WWII) and Monica Cross (CA Poor Peoples Campaign) and Patrcia Ellsberg (Activist). A video from the Zoom simulcast is available to view here.
Participants then joined in a “die-in” reenactment of the bombing. Bodies were outlined in street in front of the nuclear weapons lab at witnesses solemnly watched. They were then brought back together, with their ancestors in mind and were led in a Japanese Tradition of Bon, performing symbolic dance steps in the road to remember the nearly quarter million dead of 80 years ago.
Lastly 9 people took part in non-violent civil disobedience by blocking the gate to the Lab after the Police issued the call to disperse. These protestors were cited and released.
The event was one of many across the United States and the world observing the horrors of that day 80 years ago while reflecting on the nuclear threats of today.

Stand with the Hibakusha and Stop Nuclear Weapons on August 6th at Livermore Lab
On August 6, the 80th anniversary of the U.S. atomic bombing of Hiroshima, we invite you to Livermore to stand with the Hibakusha (survivors) to say “Never Again.”
This is an historical moment – the last living witnesses of the Hiroshima bombing on August 6, 1945 and the Nagasaki bombing on August 9, 1945 are passing the torch to all of us along with an urgent message.
Their plea? That we who value peace and justice will continue their lifelong work for a world free of nuclear weapons.
Tri-Valley CAREs is responding to the moment by working tirelessly to oppose dangerous nuclear policies at home and promote the abolition of nuclear weapons locally and globally. And, along with allied groups in the Bay Area, we are putting the final touches on a powerful 80th anniversary commemoration that will take place in front of the Livermore Lab West Gate.
And, so, on Wednesday, August 6, at 9 AM, we invite you to attend a rally, symbolic die-in and participatory Japanese bon dance led by Chizu Hamada. The commemoration will feature nuclear engineer Arjun Makhijani, Rev. Michael Yoshii, and other amazing speakers dedicated to the abolition of nuclear weapons.
We hope you will be able to join us on August 6th!
Then, on Saturday, August 10, we invite you to the New Parkway Theater in Oakland for a panel discussion and two short documentaries on the Golden Rule, which first set sail in 1958 to stop U.S. nuclear testing in the Marshall Islands. The boat has been refurbished and sails again today for peace and disarmament, crewed by a team from Veterans for Peace.

Take Action! Support Coordinated Day of Action to Raise Awareness on Capitol Hill of the Danger of Nuclear War!
Today, we are supporting the efforts of peace, faith, and disarmament groups who are joining together in Washington DC for a coordinated Day of Action to distribute signed copies of Annie Jacobsen’s powerful book, Nuclear War: A Scenario, to every single member of Congress, including yours!
This is a terrific opportunity to raise awareness AND send a clear message to Congress that folks like you back home want action and leadership at a time when even President Trump is saying we don’t need new nuclear weapons, and that we need to “denuclearize” with Russia and China.
How You Can Participate
1. Make a Quick Call
Take 1-2 minutes tomorrow (or in the very near future) to call your House Representative and both Senators to share this simple message:
Hi, my name is [Name]. I live in [City/Town] and am a constituent of Representative [Name] (or Senator [Name]). I am concerned about the growing threat of nuclear war and I want Representative [Name] (or Senator [Name]) to take real leadership on the issue, work to halt the new global nuclear arms race, pursue disarmament diplomacy with Russia and China, and support policies and legislation that reduce nuclear risks. Specifically, co-sponsorship of [ For House Representatives- “House Resolution 100, For Senators “Senate Resolution 61] – Expressing support for the continued value of arms control agreements and negotiated constraints on Russian and Chinese strategic nuclear forces.
Need to find their phone number? You can call the Capitol Hill switchboard at 202-224-3121 or look it up on the U.S. House or U.S. Senate website.
2. Visit Their District Office During the March Recess
The House and Senate are scheduled to be in recess the week of March 17th, meaning your elected officials may be back in your state. Plan to stop by their district office and deliver a similar message as the one above. You can find the address of the offices on the same U.S. House and U.S. Senate websites.
Despite all the ongoing threats to our democracy, government institutions, and rule of law, this is a moment we need to take advantage of.
If your House Representative or Senators are Republican, make sure they’re aware of what Donald Trump has said recently about nuclear weapons and why we need to act.
If your House Representative or Senator is a Democrat or Independent, tell them you’re counting on them to show real leadership and to take the threat that nuclear weapons pose to all of humanity seriously by co-sponsoring H. Res. 100 or Senate Res. 61.
As always, if you have any questions or want help, please reach out to Scott Yundt, Tri-Valley CAREs, Executive Director at scott@trivalleycares.org
