SUMMARY:URGENT ACTION ALERT: Ask for Extension of Comment Period on Livermore Lab Review
DESCRIPTION:Tri-Valley CAREs received word today from the National Nuclear Security Administration regarding our organization’s request for a 30-day extension of the public comment period for the Livermore Lab Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement (SWEIS). \nThe NNSA response stated the agency is taking our request “under consideration of course and will communicate once we have made a decision that is consistent with agency policy.” \nHERE IS WHERE YOU COME IN\nYour request for an extension\, whether sent by email or asked in person at the public hearings (or both)\, could be a deciding factor in whether the NNSA follows through and grants the extension. \nHere is key background information and a copy of Tri-Valley CAREs’ letter\, in case you would like to pull out any of its text or simply refer to it. \nBackground: The Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement for Continued Operation of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (DOE/EIS-0547) is extremely important – it will determine the limits for the environmental impacts the Lab will be allowed to generate for the next 15-years. \nTherefore\, this is a once in a generation opportunity for the public to peek into the Livermore Lab’s planned programs and comment on their potential health and environmental effects. In the past\, public comments have led to cancellation of some of the Lab’s most dangerous schemes. \nThe SWEIS is being done by NNSA pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)\, and\, under the law\, the agency must respond in the final document to all comments it receives. \nTri-Valley CAREs’ Letter: Our letter requesting a 30-day extension of the public comment period highlights four reasons justifying the extension. \nFirst\, we point out that the Draft SWEIS contains 3 volumes totaling 1\,408 pages. While the content is crucially important\, it’s often technical in nature and is not a quick read! \nSecond\, the Draft SWEIS public comment period is completely bound by the holidays. It was released in November at the beginning of the holiday period and its end date is immediately following the holiday period (January 3). A 30-day extension would move the end date to February 2. \nThird\, the Draft SWEIS is not truly accessible through the agency’s main NEPA site and those members of the public who don’t have an internal link to the document in essence can’t find it on the agency’s website using common search engines. Despite a change to the agency’s webpage recently\, this remained true as recently as December 2\, the last time we checked. \nThe first three reasons affect all members of the public; the fourth is specific to Tri-Valley CAREs. The NNSA has lagged on responding to our Freedom of Information Act requests (8 of them to be exact). SUMMARY:Good Friday Virtual Service and Protest Focuses on Livermore Lab
DESCRIPTION:On “Good Friday\,” April 15\, 2022\, our colleagues at the Ecumenical Peace Institute are planning a virtual service and annual nuclear weapons protest. This year\, the event will be virtual\, with a few of the speakers recorded live at the Livermore Lab. The event will call for an end to the development of new nuclear weapons at the Lab. \nAll people of faith or good will are invited to join on-line. The event will include readings and speakers from a variety of the world’s spiritual traditions. \nThe Good Friday service and protest will open with music at 7:45 am. The program begins at 8 am with the Rev. Allison Tanner\, who will be streamed from outside the Livermore Nuclear Weapons Lab. She will speak on the theme: “This Tax Day\, What Does the Lord Require of Us?” \nMarylia Kelley\, executive director at the Livermore-based Tri-Valley CAREs\, will also speak from the gates of the Lab. She will offer an update on the Livermore’s nuclear weapons work with a focus on the new warheads the Lab is currently developing. \nAdditionally\, Janet Cordes Gibson will do the welcome. Isabella Zizi will offer a First Nation honoring of the land and the ancestors. Farha Andrabi Navaid will share the Good Friday invocation. Wynd Kaufmyn and Rev. Max Lynn will conduct the call and response reading\, and Carl Anderson will offer thoughts on nonviolence and the war in Ukraine. \nBetsy Rose will provide music\, with additional selections from Daniel Zwickel and the Rev. Sylvia Brandon-Perez. The program also includes Jim Haber\, Mark Coplan\, Tony Scarr\, and Fr.
